Question: Will the Snow White fiasco, following other recent film fiascos, eliminate Alan Bergman and/or Dana Walden from consideration as the next CEO of Disney? It’s going to take a deft hand to navigate the company through the next 10 years. They have the business chops, but do they have the right judgement? Would an outsider be better at this point?

Its surprising to me how obvious the "lets remake a bunch of films who's central premise was established nearly 100 years ago" mistake was. This was always going to piss off a good portion of their audience regardless of the approach.

Approach 1 : Stay true to the central premise of the story (the "woke" audience was going to get pissed)

Approach 2 : Remake the stories to be more culturally sensitive (the "maga" audience was going to get pissed)

This was a losing strategy from the start...

I agree. Who do we blame? Does it mean they need an outsider?

Well it was authorized back in 2019, so I think Iger has some stink - and he probably should have just shut it down for good on his return (sunk cost falacy), but really this is probably 51% on Chapek.

According to ComScore, SW was #1 at the box office by a wide margin, and well-received, especially outside the US. MSM said it was a “sleepy” opening, but I was pleasantly surprised by the numbers. Audience breakdown was encouraging, too.

“ Disney created a succession planning committee in 2023, but the search began in earnest last year when the company enlisted Morgan Stanley Executive Chairman James Gorman to lead the effort.

Gorman said in a January letter to shareholders that the committee had made “strong progress” over the past year.

“The full board is engaged in and committed to finding the right leader for the company and we are planning for a smooth leadership transition that will enable Disney’s continued success,” he wrote.

Disney does has the benefit of time. After signing a two-year contract mostly to right Disney’s trajectory after a rocky two years under his hand-picked successor, Iger agreed to a contract extension that keeps him at Disney through the end of 2026.

Disney declined to comment on its succession planning efforts.”
