Many of you probably know intercst because he was on TMF for many years.
Recently, intercst was diagnosed with blockages in his leg veins. He had surgery this week which was supposed to clear the blockage. Unfortunately, the surgery went badly and after 9 hours the leg was amputated above the knee. He's still in the hospital. There's a thread on METAR on TMF if you want to send him a healing message.

Thanks Wendy, I think many of us remember Intercst. I read the thread. I looked at the males in my family and realized many of them didn't get past 78, and the last two years were bedridden, so I pulled the plug at 62 and flew to Japan, then to the Philippines. I'm still getting around but not as well as I used to. My wife's an avid pickle ball player, but I just walk and bike.

Wow! Thanks, Wendy. John has done some great analyses over the years.
Just 3 days ago I sent someone a link to his Medicare writeup on the retireearlyhomepage

I saw his name pop up elsewhere (maybe on reddit) and talking about some updates on his web site.
Sorry to hear about his medical situation. Hope he gets well soon.
I read quite often how all these people expect to live to 90 or whatever based on parents or how they are currently feeling but having observed many people over the years the number of 80+ year olds that are indendent is very small.
My father was pretty healthy all his life, went to the gym at the retirement center all the time and was fine up around 80 or so but passed away at 84 and the last year or two got weaker quite quickly and could not work out. As they say, use it or lose it. Once you stop exercising you go downhill quickly. And he never had a stroke, heart attack and only prostate cancer in his late 60s. Wasn't heavy, etc. Fortunately he never had any memory issues.
My wife's two brothers have their mother in laws living with them and both are mostly wheelchair bound around 80 and going downhill quickly.
I retired at 60 and went back to work for a few months last year because I was bored but didn't stay long because it was out of state and full time. I would love to find a part time 20-24 hr job I could do from home but life is short.
My uncle is in his early 80s and keeps his weight under control but he is slowing down quickly and just had a second hip replacement last year.
Plan to do activities earlier than later. My wife is dealing with knee issues and might need a knee replacement. It is tough to travel when you can't walk without pain.
Be careful of pickle ball. Lots of injuries. My friend's wife had to give it up recently (60s) due to her knee which caused her to favor it and now triggers hip pain.
