Bolsonaro is a comrade in insurrection? Jan 6 was an attempted coup.

US steps up efforts to help Bolsonaro avoid jail over alleged coup plot

State department condemns judge’s decision to place former Brazil president under house arrest as trial proceeds

"...The Trump administration has thrown its weight behind efforts to help Bolsonaro avoid a lengthy jail sentence for allegedly plotting to seize power after he lost the 2022 election to his leftwing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Federal police claim the conspiracy included plans to assassinate Lula, his vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin, and Moraes. The plot allegedly culminated on 8 January 2023, a week after Lula took power, when thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed congress, the supreme court and the presidential palace in what police claim was an unsuccessful attempt to start a military intervention.

But Trump has claimed his ally – who is currently being tried by the supreme court – is the victim of a politically motivated “witch-hunt” and last week slapped Magnitsky sanctions on Moraes. The US president has also announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports from Wednesday. “This trial should not be taking place!” Trump wrote in a letter to Lula earlier this month calling Bolsonaro’s treatment “an international disgrace”..."

So we level 50% tariffs against Brazil because Trump likes Bolsonaro when most Brazilians don't?

We put Magnitsky sanctions on the Judge running the trial.

AI Overview
Magnitsky sanctions, both the original 2012 version and the expanded Global Magnitsky Act of 2016, are a series of targeted sanctions imposed by the United States (and adopted by other countries) on individuals and entities involved in human rights abuses and corruption. The sanctions primarily involve asset freezes and visa restrictions, aiming to hold those responsible accountable and deter further abuses

WTF are we doing?

If I were a foreign leader, I'd ignore almost everything coming out of D.C. "US state dept says...", and I'd just tune it out. For at least the next 3.5 years.

It would be counterproductive (even harmful) to take anything we say seriously, in terms of internal matters and policies of any foreign nation.

Hard to tune out 50% tariffs.

Hard to tune out 50% tariffs.

Not much they can do about it.

Also, with a little patience, most (or all) of the tariffs will likely be deemed invalid by the courts. Congress has tariff power, not the POTUS. I doubt Congress could pass a tariff bill.
