Moderna was a giga-cash-generating hyper-growth stock in the COVID years, and they banked a lot of moolah at that time. Since then though, the losses have grown steep, and while Moderna has an exciting pipeline of drugs in development, they don't expect to get back to break-even in the immediate future.

Their stock has fallen and fallen and fallen again - recently breaking beneath a level of support to fall some more, as the USA administration has grown somewhat hostile to vaccines, even as the company has made good progress on their pipeline.

Yahoo reports their tangible book value was $10.8 billion as of last reporting, and with the latest drops in the stock, their reported market cap is $10.5 billion.

Analysis of their prospects is complicated by a complex net of lawsuits, both by Moderna vs competition and vice versa.

They do have exciting technology and prospects. I bought the stock a couple years ago as a mix of value and story, back when the cash was flooding in but the market was discounting the stock heavily for the end of the COVID emergency, and I've lost my butt on it so far. With the stock now trading in the vicinity of book value, I wonder if we're near the bottom, but I don't see any signs of a bottom just yet.

As a story stock with previously demonstrated potential for hyper-growth and immense profits, the upside could be tremendous, but, if the legal story turns hard against them, the downside could also be quite brutal.

Anyone have any thoughts? Probably belongs in the 'too hard' pile.

I used to invest in Drug stocks (Biogen, PFE, JNJ, even a few other more speculative ones) and determined its "too hard". I then diversified into PPH ETF; but eventually just cut ties with the sector entirely.

As a physician, I thoroughly believe that the upside of the mRNA vaccine technology will be tremendous. As an investor, I have been frustrated by almost all of my investments in pharmaceutical companies. I still hold shares in a couple pharmaceutical companies which I have had for years and years; to my mind, they are like buying a lottery ticket but not knowing when or if the lottery will ever actually take place.

it's rare for new platforms to get a 'free' look at full spectrum clinical data on a global scale via gov help.

that experience is the embedded option in the ~2 mRNA giant rivals.

think of another promising platform, e.g., crispr, and consider the odds\cost against such a knowledge windfall.

Great to know. If you can't pick a good pharmaceutical company, it is hopeless for the rest of us.

More of a cautionary tale than thoughts, but on the advice of my primary doctor, who pushes vaccines strongly, I am to avoid MRNA vaccines. My body simply reacts too wildly to them, with each additional vaccine giving me a worse reaction. While I am not a vaccine avoider on principal, the last MRNA vaccine triggered phantom smells for me, in addition to other long Covid symptoms like plummeting blood pressure. Have taken both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine, both of which have given me increasing issues with each shot. Looks like Novovax this year for me, if any.

who admittedly reacts weirdly to many meds and avoids them as much as possible

physician-scientists should be able to weight and greatly differentiate their personal experience from millions\billions of others, and in public forums make unambiguously clear the relative significance.
