The right has worked long and hard to rig the system is such a way as they don't have to have the support of the majority. They have mastered gerrymandering. They've managed to dominate many state legislatures, even in some very purple states. They've stacked the courts. And for presidential contests they have the sweet advantage of the electoral college.
And a huge advantage is an ill-informed base and a lying right wing media machine to keep that base constantly enraged and motivated such that they will happily vote against their own real interests.

i agree. despite the obama years, democrats have been outplayed at several levels since clinton. failure to imagine many GOP tactics is blame.
it is for this reason that a media outlets like The Atlantic took responsibility for 2016,2020 failures, and released an entire issue on the dire threat of a trump win. not many have followed.
what is missing is how independents will do. since they poll unreliably, and avoid politics in general up until the day effort is put into voting, all you can go on is how they actually voted. and the last ~4 cycles have been anti-GOP. is it possible for the GOP losses to be so lopsided that MAGA returns to non-political activities? can trump bring about a full disintegration of the GOP, since they are rudderless without his whims?

True. And there is so much energy and strategy devoted to this, and the base denies that it is there. It has been a constant over the years that some people are better at governing than others and they should be allowed to govern. There is no real belief in democracy. The distrust of the government back east was present when the midwest and west were settled and has never left.

Resentment is feature to be manipulated. Get them to resent, which can become anger and hate. So they will go into college campuses where some social experiments are going on and amplify it as if this is being foisted on the general public, and you can present bills filed to appeal to some niche group as if those northerners, those back easter elites are going to foist this on us. Rally round the flag and protect family values. Dirty nasty raping terrorist hordes are coming across the border to defile our wonderful white women, mix with our pure white genes, bring that Muslim barbarity, and then out baby us and outvote us. When we win it's against the odds. :) Republican already have an advantage in the electoral college. We don't see any Republicans saying, "let's not gerrymander or restrict the vote in any way, let's win on our record and policies." However, if I've missed it, please point it out.
Excuse me, but The Biden Crime Family Hoax brought out that a Russian disinformation campaign was aimed to be funneled through the FBI. Definitely aids Trump. Can't be reversed, and it underscores it's very highly likely Russian Collusion wasn't a hoax.

Biden is far from perfect, but he is light-years ahead of Trump in terms of quality and competence. Alas, even though he has accomplished a lot, the public isn't aware of a lot of it (it's "behind the scenes" stuff that people don't really see, but they feel it indirectly). And he's not very energizing.
The primary energizer is Trump. It is ironic that I think Dems will have to rely on his energizing opposition to him for Biden to win. I'm pretty sure that was the dynamic in 2020. Another Rep candidate might have won had Trump not been in the picture, but too many people were horrified at the prospect of another 4 years of the farcical Trump circus. I know I am, and a lot of Republicans are too (like Cheney...she's a strong conservative, and completely against Trump).
I don't think the IVF thing will cost Trump any votes. Vangies have no choice. They can't vote for Satan...errr...Biden. So it's Trump. From what he's said about abortion, I'm sure Mike is not put off by that. And he's -almost assuredly- not alone in that.
So Trump is going to have to scare the independents enough for them to come out in force and vote against him.

We make use of uniquely comprehensive arrest data from the Texas Department of Public Safety to compare the criminality of undocumented immigrants to legal immigrants and native-born US citizens between 2012 and 2018.
We find that [Texas] undocumented immigrants have substantially lower crime rates than native-born citizens and legal immigrants across a range of felony offenses. Relative to undocumented immigrants,
US-born citizens are over 2 times more likely to be arrested for violent crimes, 2.5 times more likely to be arrested for drug crimes, and over 4 times more likely to be arrested for property crimes. In addition, the proportion of arrests involving undocumented immigrants in Texas was relatively stable or decreasing over this period. The differences between US-born citizens and undocumented immigrants are robust to using alternative estimates of the broader undocumented population, alternate classifications of those counted as “undocumented” at arrest and substituting misdemeanors or convictions as measures of crime.
