I actually agree with this. No phones when school is in session (including lunch and breaks). The described benefits were what I expected (i.e. students actually talking to each other during lunch, etc).

The ban has made the atmosphere at Timber Creek both more pastoral and more carceral.

Mr. Wasko said students now make eye contact and respond when he greets them. Teachers said students seemed more engaged in class.

“Oh, I love it,” said Nikita McCaskill, a government teacher at Timber Creek. “Students are more talkative and more collaborative.”

Not all up-side, of course. Nothing ever is. But I think a net positive.

More carceral? Is that seen as a good thing? ('carceral' means like a prison!)

From what I could see, it is a combination of a bit more monitoring the students (for enforcement), and some student attitudes of "it's like I'm in prison" (as if any of them would know what that was like). My campus wasn't closed (though many are today), but we had no cellphones. Today I would probably be like a lot of students ("prison!"), but obviously I couldn't miss what didn't exist when I was younger.

The main point of the article was that students appeared more engaged, and interacted more with others.
