Despite being an investor for almost sixty years, I still have times when I question my sanity and my ability to make prudent decisions. Note: I owned stock at age 10 and prior to college invested my agricultural labor and paper route earnings into stock. I was out of the market from high school to age 40 because of having kids, buying a house and starting a business.
I've learned to sit on my hands and to focus on other matters when it seems others are making a ton of money in the stock market (paper gains) or when the stock market is going down day-after-day (2009 - 2009). Still, it is hard to sit still during those times as our hunter-gather genes want to do something, anything, about our situation.
Here is an article from 2015 I found today searching with Thomas Paine's famous quote + value investing. A good article it seems for talking an investor off the "action today" ledge.
