Now...as to the fires in LA? Santa Ana winds are nothing new. Are these more powerful because of climate change? I don't think it is possible to say.
They were stronger than usual and sustained... but that's not new.
What has changed over the last 75 years is population and development.
When I was a kid the east SF Valley was undeveloped as were most of the Santa mountains. Firefighters had a much easier job with far far fewer communities and developments to protect.
The more you build, the more you will lose when natural events occur. Hurricanes on the south and east coasts, tornadoes in the middle, fires on the arid west coast.
It ain't rocket science.
Yes, it's getting hotter and drier. That makes the fires and hurricanes more intense and, perhaps, more frequent.
If you build it, it will burn.
