Someone on the TMF boards requested a Pandemic board on Shrewd'm, which is one I would also like to see. Sheila727 had fascinating insight that I miss, and many posters linked interesting articles/studies.

If "pandemic" or "COVID" is too narrow a topic, perhaps "virology" or some such would attract more people. For now, I'll check the STEM board for any COVID posts.

And thanks to you, Manlobbi, for an amazing shrewy site! The loss of the MI and Berkshire boards at TMF affected me a bit emotionally. Felt like I lost part of my family. No wonder, since I've been reading them since 1997.

I will definitely add a pandemic board, I think it is a good idea. Washington are continuing to fund experimental virus research.

Much worse pandemic would not be a surprise at some point. In fact if such research continues I think it is guaranteed.

I felt this amongst people and I have received emails involving statements as strong as 'I became despondent'. It really was as if a large part of some people's lives was simply torn away, and I acted reflexively.

A bit of history:

Loren Cobb started the original pandemic board on TMF several years before COVID. It didn't generate a lot of traffic. Occasional posts about 1918, potential future pandemics, etc. I think there was a blip of activity when Ebola hit the news. Obviously the board became very busy in early 2020, and remained so until TMF closed it.

So I think "pandemics" is a good heading. If we are to be nitpicky, "virology" would be too specific. The Black Death was bacterial, but it was a pandemic too.

I have added a board named 'Pandemics' in the Outskirts.

Loren Cobb was a wonderful man and we engaged quite a lot back in 1999 when he was providing mathematical models for the MI board related to selecting relative strength adjusted for volatility.

I have to remind that many people don't know this site exist who actually want to be here, but simply never visited discussion.fool so would not have any reference whatsoever unless someone actually contacts them. Last I knew he was ill. Haven't heard from him in a long time. He appears still to be listed on faculty at his university, so hopefully he is doing well.
