Short and to the point.
Reporter question at a press conference:
Some of the President-elect's advisers have suggested that you should resign. If he asked you to leave would you go?
Powell:
No.
Follow up from another reporter:
Do you believe the president has the power to fire or demote you, and has the FED determined the legality of a President demoting at will any of the other Governors with leadership positions?
Powell:
Not permitted under the law.
Reporter:
What?
Powell:
Not. Permitted. Under. The. Law.
I'd say he looked a little annoyed at the questions, but Powell always looks a little annoyed.

By my reckoning (with the help of Wikipedia), Powell will be in office until Feb 5, 2026, at which time Trump will have the prerogative to replace him. The term is for 4 years by law, and Biden appointed him (actually reappointed him after Trump first appointed him to the office to serve starting on Feb 5, 2018) to serve starting on Feb 5, 2022.
