“If tariffs are making Americans poorer, the simplest and fairest way to stop that is not to tariff.”
It makes no sense to tax people with tariffs – and then give people the money back in the form of checks.
Justin Wolfers, economics professor at the University of Michigan

One of the only things that polls worse than the Trump economy is the president’s almost unprecedented use of tariffs.

The White House, in an apparent bid to turn sentiment around on both the economy and tariffs, is once again floating a bold idea: redeploying tariff revenue to fund $2,000 dividend checks to lower- and middle-income Americans.

It’s easy to see how these tariff rebate payments could win over skeptical voters and help people who are struggling financially. Yet beyond the political appeal, it’s hard to make sense of the economic logic behind this idea.

Economists tell CNN that tariffs are unlikely to generate enough revenue to pay for dividend payments the size President Donald Trump has promised.

If all the tariff revenue is blown on dividend payments, there would be nothing left to chip away at the $38 trillion national debt – one of Trump’s other promises. Depending on how they are structured, dividend payments could even add to America’s mountain of debt.

If rebate checks are distributed, history shows that many Americans would likely spend some or all of their cash from Uncle Sam. This would increase demand without boosting supply, which could worsen the cost-of-living problem at the heart of Americans’ frustrations with the economy.

Trump's $2,000 "dividend payments" aren't in the news today. It was just another harebrained Trump idea that he impulsively blurted without thinking about the consequences. Someone must have explained the obvious drawbacks to him.

That idea has been floated before. Then, there were the DOGE rebate checks.

The sales pitch for "supply side economics", since the 80s, has been "let us do something that will hurt you or your neighbors, now, and you will get goodies later". That is essentially the con I got from bosses over the years: invitations for me to cut my throat now, for their benefit, and I would receive goodies later. Of course, when later came, he always had an excuse why he couldn't deliver the goodies, but, now, he had another ask.

Wendy,

Might be, but Trump is more the type to enjoy pulling wings off a fly. He says things for that.

Trump has stated, at various times, that he would use the tariff money to
bail out the farmers feeling the effects of the tariff policies. He has stated
that he is going to use the tariff funds to give most Americans a $2,000 "dividend"
check. He has also said he will use the tariff funds to pay down the national debt.
This is just off recent memory, he's probably made other claims as well.

Is it illegal for a journalist to confront Trump about how there is not
nearly enough money coming from tariffs to actually do all these things ?

( not just Trump, either. Lutnik and Bessent propagate the fairy tales as well ).

This is not political, I'd feel the same if it were D's or Independents
spouting such nonsense. America is being steered toward an economic cliff,
and journalists are not willing to confront the driver(s) of the runaway
vehicle.

Laura Ingraham asked him where the money will come from, to pay all the bonuses he is promising to air traffic controllers, if they stay on the job without pay. He shrugged, said he would find it somewhere.

But funding for SNAP?

Steve....putting on the NOMEX longjohns.
