Wondering why your 4th of July barbeque was more expensive than last year?
Thanks to Don's tariffs, cookout costs are up 13% YOY.
Did we MAGA yet or are we sill waiting?
"Ground beef and ice cream hit their highest prices on record since the 1980s, the analysis found citing Consumer Price Index data."
"Miller Lite and Coors Light six-packs are up more than 13% at Walmart since Liberation Day and through June 26."
"Imported beer prices also rose with Peroni increasing 10.5% and Modelo Especial 9.5%."
"Cookout essentials like aluminum foil, grill tools, and sunscreen saw hikes between 6% and 18%."
"68% of those surveyed said barbecues are noticeably more expensive to host this year with 55% noting Trump's tariffs are making holiday celebrations more expensive."
"Very simple word, groceries. Like almost nobody -- you know, who uses the word? I started using the word -- the groceries.
When you buy apples, when you buy bacon, when you buy eggs, they would double and triple the price over a short period of time, and I won an election based on that.
We're going to bring those prices way down." ~Donald Trump

Coffee is up 20.9% year-over-year, with a 3.1% monthly increase, per CPI.
Uncooked beef steaks are up 16.6% year-over-year with a 3.3% monthly bump.
While fruits and vegetable overall were up 2.3% year over year, apples rose 9.6% and bananas, 6.6%."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 2.7% year-over-year increase in grocery prices as of August 2025, with a 0.6% monthly jump—the fastest rise in three years.
Vegetables—heavily dependent on immigrant labor—are up a 38.9%.

It's almost as if Trump has no idea how the economy works and is clueless about the food supply...
"The Trump administration said that its immigration crackdown is hurting farmers and risking higher food prices for Americans by cutting off agriculture’s labor supply."
"The Labor Department warned, the near total cessation of the inflow of illegal aliens is threatening the stability of domestic food production and prices for U.S. consumers."
"Unless the Department acts immediately to provide a source of stable and lawful labor, this threat will grow."
"The Department concludes that qualified and eligible U.S. workers will not make themselves available in sufficient numbers."
"The comments appear to be the first time that the Trump administration has publicly acknowledged that its hallmark immigration policy — sealing the border and deporting undocumented immigrants — threatens labor shortages and higher food prices. However, economists have been sounding the alarm since Trump campaigned on the issue during last year’s presidential election."

Still waiting on bacon to come down. I eat a lot of yogurt since my tonsil cancer. I've noticed that the yogurt I like gets wiped out, and if it isn't that, it's the cottage cheese, bacon too. But yesterday, if you tried a comparison, half of the price comps were price per ounce, and the rest were price per pound - so you had to work to compare. Evil bastards! Just teasing, but if they keep that up I'ma gonna wonder. :)

The one that affects me most cost-wise, or at least sticks in my craw---- steak.
I like eat a nice steak at home once a week. DD also joins in. Mind you i've started doing smaller steak and augmenting with shrimp only because i want ot keep red meat under a certain level per week but still...I do notice it.
This week we had (2) Ribeyes. Excellent cuts mind you, but for 2 steaks, 8 ounces each it was $23 and change.
By the time i toss in the sides, etc it's like a $18.00 dinner per person .... at home.
Ugh times have changed. There was a time i was even more careless about these things and to do a 22 ounce bone-in ribeye twice a week was normal :)

By the time i toss in the sides, etc it's like a $18.00 dinner per person .... at home. Did you see the piece the other day that Delta Airlines declares it's "premium" strategy a big success?
Delta’s bet on wealthy Americans driving the economy is working: Premium seats are set to overtake main cabin for the first time in historyhttps://fortune.com/2025/10/09/delta-earnings-prem...We see the same thinking among "JCs" in many companies. I have commented before about the "premium pricing" strategies at VW, Ford, Disney parks, Vegas venues. They seem to think the concept I learned about in b-school, fifty years ago, "demand elasticity with respect to price", has been repealed. They think they can raise prices to infinity, and if they lose a low end customer here and there, they don't care, because they can more than make it up by taking more off of each of the shrinking number of people who still buy from them.
In other words, they don't care if Baaa doesn't like the price of steaks, because he keeps buying them. And if he quits buying them, they still don't care, because they are taking more than enough money off of the people who do still buy, to make up for a dyspeptic Baa quitting on them.
Meanwhile, at the other end of the market, fast food places are trying to offer cheaper meals. You can grab two Jr Bacon Cheeseburgers, with medium fries and a drink, at Wendy's, for $8. I can grab two small bacon cheeseburgers at BK for $5, and, because I'm an old phart, add a "senior" drink for 50 cents.
Enjoy the Shiny economy, where only the rich can afford nice things.
Steve

My wife gets me invited out to lunch fairly often, but I've noticed most of the restaurants have bland or poor taste unless you buy the more expensive item, and often I don't like the taste. I racked it up to the radiation treatment in the tonsil area affecting my taste buds. It already did in the back of my nostrils, so I take a Zyrtek every day I'm going out.
They eat out in cheap places and I like that. :)

Yes I'm with you on steak. The mid-level places aren't that good. What I consider to be the 'top' places are GREAT but not a weekly haunt lol.
So steak i enjoy at home the best. Frying pan, butter, salt, and i'm good.
In general - i feel cheaper restaurants, or even mid priced ones---have food i enjoy and ---big for me...it's served HOT.
15 mins from me is a diner. Lunch specials are $13-$17. and as an examole - homemade chicken soup. Meatloaf with sides. Homemade dessert. Usually served nice and hot too.

Grocery prices were up 0.7% in December, the largest one-month gain since October 2022.
Headline CPI up +2.7% over the year, and 0.3% last month.
Electricity up +6.66% YoY.
Ground beef up +15.5% YoY.
In a performance as predictable as it is profitable, Trump once again treated the MAGA faithful to another bedtime story, truth optional, applause guaranteed....

Umm.
Oversupply and weakening consumer demand have been causing milk, butter and cheese prices on the wholesale market and at the grocery store to fall. Eggs, too. In short, nothing related to any actions by Trumpedo.
The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.891, nowhere close to the "under $2" Trumpedo keeps claiming.
After shopping at Costco, I can report that prices, even at that deep discounter, are still up, up, up.
But I guess the media are lying to me.

Given the fact that Trump has probably not had to pump gas into his own gas tank for years, if he ever did…….
When he thinks “price of gasoline”, he probably checks the NYMEX futures price, which gives a thumbnail approximation of the wholesale, not retail price.
At the moment, the cash price for a gallon of February delivery (wholesale) gasoline is $1.82, so I suppose he can convince himself he’s not lying when he says gasoline is under 2 bucks.
If I had an empty 10,000 gallon tank, I could fill it for $1.82 as well! (Plus transport)

In blue states run by democrats, gas is ridiculously expensive. I haven't been able to fill my tank for under $50 in years thanks to Washington's absurd taxes.
But if I lived in Texas, I'd pay $1.89 in some places:

The median household income in Springfield is $46,000, over $30,000 below the national average. They have three times the national average of robberies and twice the national average of rapes. Missouri ranks 43rd for both crime and healthcare.
But, hey, gas is cheap.

Grocery inflation just won't go away. That hits the lowest income households (MAGA) the hardest...
"December saw biggest grocery price increase in over 3 years."
"Year-over-year data show nonalcoholic beverages recorded the largest increase at 5.1%, followed by meats, poultry, fish and eggs, which rose 3.9%."
"Food at home, perhaps the most psychologically and politically salient category, saw its biggest increase since July 2022.
That will hit especially hard for the lowest income Americans, who typically spend about a third of their income on food."
"Food inflation has been running warm for much of the past year, due in part to high commodity prices and, to some extent, the impact of tariffs on food and packaging inputs."
