President Truman's Renovation collection

“During the administration of President Harry S. Truman, the White House underwent a renovation and expansion so extensive, it changed the Executive Mansion more than the fire of 1814. The White House we know today is largely due to the renovation led by Truman. The construction took place between 1948 and 1952 and was a remarkable feat of engineering. National Park Service photographer Abbie Rowe captured the entire process on film and the below galleries document the transformation.”

A very interesting read

The construction took place between 1948 and 1952 and was a remarkable feat of engineering.

They really didn't have much choice. The foundation of the building failed. It was on it's way to collapse if the work was not done.

From the net sifter:

Yes, a leg of Margaret Truman's piano fell through the floor of the White House in 1948, which was the final catalyst for the major renovation of the building. The incident revealed the building was structurally unsound, with engineers noting that the house was "only 'out of habit' still standing," according to the White House Historical Association.

The incident: In the summer of 1948, a leg of Margaret Truman's piano crashed through the floor of her second-floor sitting room into the Family Dining Room below.

Structural discovery: Investigation revealed that the floorboards were rotted and the main floor beam was split. Engineers also found that the ceiling below had dropped 18 inches, and the entire second floor was at risk of collapse.

Renovation: The incident prompted the complete gutting and rebuilding of the White House's interior from 1948 to 1952, during which the Truman family temporarily lived in Blair House.

Modernization: A new steel frame was installed, along with modern plumbing and electrical systems, to ensure the building's structural integrity for future generations.

That being said, given the scale of the ballroom, and the garish decorations, it is clearly Trump's monument to himself.

Of course, Truman got funding and authorization from Congress to make the renovations. In other words, he didn’t break the law.

Truman also worked to preserve the historic appearance of the exterior and the layout of the rooms, ensuring the building looked largely the same to the public. In other words, he didn’t try to turn the White House into a cheap gold plated French bordello.

You know what AlphaWolf, you’re a real jerk!

I posted the article because I thought it extremely interesting and as a matter of history of the White House for all to see thinking others may enjoy the article along with the other interesting happenings at the White House.
I consider Harry S Truman as one of our greatest Presidents.

You come along with your Trump Derangement Syndrome, have nothing interning to add of the
enormous undertaking to save the People’s House by HST.

I don’t have any poster in my ignore box, I skip over some posters and don’t pay much attention
to the insults etc. BUT, I’m sick of your filth, your insults and your TDS. You’re going to disappear from this Board where I won’t even see your name appear and I couldn’t care less what your sordid reply will be.
I won’t see it.

There are currently no approved plans to rebuild, no permits, no signs of weatherproofing for a construction project begun just before winter, no indication that the history or the paintings or the artifacts in the East Wing were preserved. There is only the destruction of the People’s House.

Today, Luke Broadwater of the New York Times reported that Trump will demolish the entire East Wing. According to a senior administration official, the demolition should be finished by this weekend.

I consider Harry S Truman as one of our greatest Presidents.

The only thing I know about Truman is that he is famous for saying "The buck stops here". I admire that sentiment greatly.

Mr. Trump, on the other hand, could not be more opposite. His mantra would be more like "The buck stops here when something good happens". When bad things happen, which is often, he passes the buck onto others, usually Biden or Obama or some form of "Democrats". When poor job numbers come out, he fires the person in charge of putting together the report. The only bucks stopping at Mr. Trump's desk are the ones he's grifting.

My post was meant to add some interest to the history of the White House.

It’s a shame the left here took it as another opportunity to vent their hate and TDS.
I should have known better.

Stop it with the recs. There are only 3 or 4 conservatives that frequent this Board.
All other posters and readers here are of the left.

I remember at the Political Asylum (also overrun by the left) the left savored their many recs and bragged about them. I think some thought they could take their recs to the bank and cashed them in.
That’s how dumb some were.

I haven’t seen any conservatives on this board.

Let’s look at just a couple of the basic conservative values:

Individual liberty: Belief that individuals have inherent rights that should be protected from government overreach. In other words, not like breaking down doors in the middle of the night without a warrant and holding people without the right of due process (hint: It’s in the Constitution), etc.

Limited government: A preference for a smaller government with a reduced role in the economy and in individual lives. In other words, not dictating what books can be read, what beliefs are acceptable, what is taught in schools, trying to limit free speech, using government functions to attack your perceived enemies, etc.

Free markets: Support for a capitalist system with minimal government intervention, believing it fosters economic growth and individual opportunity. In other words, not unilaterally imposing tariffs, taking gifts from corporations in exchange for beneficial rulings, not firing staff for reporting economic numbers you don’t like, etc.

Strong national defense: A belief in maintaining a strong military and a robust approach to national security. In other words, not putting someone in charge of the military who is reported to drink a lot, was a talking head on a right-wing television station, who discussed war plans on a public app anyone could download, and who gathered every high ranking officer in one location for an incoherent pep rally.

Rule of law: An emphasis on a society governed by established laws, not by arbitrary rule, and a belief in the importance of law and order. Good Lord, where do I even start? Let’s just say that putting a convicted 34-count felon in charge who breaks a law EVERY single day (not to mention breaking at least one of the Ten Commandments EVERY single day) is NOT believing in the rule of law.

Honestly, I’m more conservative than the so-called conservatives on this board.

You're right.

Conservatism and Trumpism are almost polar opposites.

There are many true conservatives in this country, but they are not Trumpers.

There are many who call themselves conservative, but they are actually just reactionary. They’re not really in favor of most conservative principles, they’re just upset at liberals - so they think that must make them “conservative”.

c'mon, nuance has not worked since 2016.
in the end, if someone votes gop, they are MAGA, and conservative, and rightwing, and...since it leads all to the same result.

take the case of NC, which narrowly voted dem for state level offices, and overwhelmingly gop at the level of 'local rep they know'.
the result has been a wrecking of state authority at the top, even more gerrymandered state districts at the bottom.

the concentration of power has been the opposite of their reasoning for trump votes, who should be allowed to go unchecked.
