Dollar General press release (NYSE:DG): Q2 GAAP EPS of $2.13 misses by $0.34.
Revenue of $9.8B (+3.9% Y/Y) misses by $110M.
FY2023 Outlook: Net sales growth in the range of 1.3% to 3.3%, compared to its previous expectation of 3.5% to 5.0%; Same-store sales growth in the range of a decline of approximately 1.0% to growth of 1.0%, compared to its previous expectation of growth in the range of 1.0% to 2.0%; Diluted EPS in the range of approximately $7.10 to $8.30, or a decline of 34% to 22%, compared to its previous year-over-year change expectation of an approximate 8% decline to flat growth; effective tax rate of approximately 22.5%; Capital expenditures in the range of $1.6 billion to $1.7 billion; 3,110 real estate projects in the United States, including 990 new store openings, 2,000 remodels, and 120 store relocations.

On the one hand, all retail has been reporting bad numbers, so this aint a big suprise.
On the other hand, Im not thrilled with the size of the miss and the lack of visibility that lead to such a significant revision in terms of the rest of the year.
Apparently the market isnt either as we are down more than 14% pre-market

I had been expecting poor numbers but hoped the market would shrug it off as the stock looks like it has bottomed recently. I suppose we have another opportunity to buy this on sale....This time 15% off the prices from last quarter...

At least the compnay didnt buy back any shares last quarter...

Quotes from management

'While we are not satisfied with our overall financial results, we made significant progress in the second quarter improving execution in our supply chain and our stores, as well as reducing our inventory growth rate and further strengthening our price position,' said Jeff Owen, Dollar General's chief executive officer.

'These actions were an important driver of improving customer traffic trends and growing total market share in the second quarter. In addition, we executed nearly 850 real estate projects during the quarter, further extending our reach and expanding our ability to serve both new and existing customers.'

DG currently $131-132 in premarket, roughly 16-17% drop.

I think this could have been anticipated; DLTR dropped around 13% instantly last week on similar news, and DG only dropped 3% at the time. Also similar bad news from several other US retailers re: shrinkage/shoplifting.

> At least the compnay didnt buy back any shares last quarter...

Buying back when the price is high, then being unable/unwilling when the price is low, is surely a bad thing.

I hear you re anticipation...but still figured it was already priced in - given that DLTR earnings were weak and as DLTR has been trading at a higher premium lately.
Apparently not.

<<and dont plan to buy back for the rest of the year>>

Classic CEO behavior!

When the stock is overvalued the buyback guns are a blazin', when the inevitable bear market arrives the buyback guns are quickly holstered and the CEO's go hide under their beds!

Capital destruction at its finest.

"The state of some Dollar General stores over the course of this year has been unhelpful to converting new shoppers into bigger spenders and to increasing basket size more generally," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail said in a note to clients on Thursday.

"While few consumers expect Dollar General to be a place of great inspiration, basic shopkeeping standards ' such as not having aisles completely blocked by cages of merchandise, which are a function of excess inventory ' are important," he added.

With more discount store options to choose from and chains like Walmart focusing on price, there are fewer reasons for these consumers to have to switch to Dollar General

The lackluster results are especially surprising given that other value-focused retailers, including Walmart (WMT) and TJX Cos. (TJX), have thrived as shoppers seek to stretch their budgets in response to inflation and high interest rates.

Why, then, have dollar stores failed to reap those benefits? To Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe, it comes down to a mix of company-specific and macroeconomic challenges.
'They have some operational hurdles that they're in the midst of overcoming, and it's hindered results a little bit,' he told Barron's.

Both Dollar General and Dollar Tree are in the early stages of new investment strategies, including spending on higher wages, store remodeling, supply-chain improvements, and efforts to fight theft. Other competitors, including Walmart, are further along in their investment cycles, he said.

Another 6% off today, I wonder if we'll test the low 100's. Interesting one to watch. Think I may buy below 110 otherwise it's just "another damn retailer" as Munger days 😂

I have to say the last purchase I made from this board recommendation was that own brand credit card outfit and it absolutely tanked so I have to say I avoid them unless I've thoroughly done my own research and am very comfortable with the valuation. Buyer beware!
