-The Coast Guard grabbed it with the Navy's help but that was them being used in a Civil action on the high seas
-They had a warrant
-The tanker is one the sanctioned list and made trips between Iran, Venezuela and China loading and unloading illicit oil

According to a U.S. official familiar with the operation, the seizure was executed by the Coast Guard with support from the U.S. Navy after a federal judge green-lit the warrant roughly two weeks ago. Another official told the New York Times the ship — identified as the Skipper — had been sailing under a falsified flag and has a documented history of trafficking illicit Iranian oil. The vessel, although carrying Venezuelan crude at the time, was seized because of those Iranian smuggling ties, not because of any direct connection to Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

The Beeb has a former USAF officer on last night that claimed the seizure was perfectly fine, and asked what good are sanctions if you don't enforce them, including seizing ships and cargoes.

Exclusive: US preparing to seize more tankers off Venezuela's coast after first ship taken, sources say

HOUSTON/LONDON/WASHINGTON, Dec 11 (Reuters) - The U.S. is preparing to intercept more ships transporting Venezuelan oil following the seizure of a tanker this week, as it increases pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, six sources familiar with the matter said on Thursday.

Asked whether the Trump administration planned further ship seizures, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters she would not speak about future actions but said the U.S. would continue executing the president’s sanctions policies.

“We're not going to stand by and watch sanctioned vessels sail the seas with black market oil, the proceeds of which will fuel narcoterrorism of rogue and illegitimate regimes around the world," she said.

The U.S. has assembled a target list of several more sanctioned tankers for possible seizure, according to one of the people familiar with the matter.

Use it or lose it!
