Jim Jordan just announced he is withdrawing from the Speaker race. So who's next?

Scalese? (again)
McCarthy? (again)
Stefanik?

Who is ambitious enough to want the hassle and crazy enough to win 10-15 votes within the crazy caucus of the Republican Party?

I couldn't find that. Do you have a link? All the other reporting says that he's moving ahead.

He did say that he would support a resolution to temporarily empower McHenry....but that's probably just a tactic to call the bluff of the folks advocating that. He knows (or thinks) that they don't have the votes to do that, and he wants to make that abundantly clear that that's not really an actual option.

He's "suspending" his attempt while agreeing to support interim powers for McHenry.

Yea, I mis-read the headline. Doesn't look like he's completely thrown in the towel but there is an organize core of people that seem to make it impossible for him to whittle away at the 20 or 21 holdouts.

WatchingTheHerd: Jim Jordan just announced he is withdrawing from the Speaker race.

Might be more accurate to say he's "pausing" his bid for the gavel. But reporting suggests that some republicans have told Jordan he'll never be Speaker and others are urging him to officially withdraw. As of now though, he's still maneuvering to be Speaker.

The plan seems to be to give Rep. Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.) the temporary speaker's role but democrats are concerned that Jordan will simply be a de facto speaker pulling McHenry's strings.

Complicating matters, if some democrats do vote for McHenry there's certain to be republicans who flip to a 'no' vote just because they cannot be on the same side as democrats.

Yeah - probably more than that. Lots of reporting that many of the original 55 who voted against him have been coordinating to "slow roll" their votes in opposition, so that he loses votes with every round of voting.

That puts Jordan in a bind. He can't call a third vote, since that proves he's losing support. It's probably not going to help him if nothing happens heading into the weekend. If the House spins its wheels trying (and failing) to give McHenry some extra powers, then it buys him some time to see if his completely misguided pressure campaign might actually work. It won't, of course, but he doesn't seem to realize that.

One can only hope that there is enough common sense, common decency, on the right side of the aisle to know that an election denying Trump cultist can only worsen the hostility of the willingly misinformed MAGA movement.
The MAGA movement emboldens white supremacists, neo-nazis, and assorted bigots. These hate groups no longer lurk beneath the oil slick of the Tea Party and MAGA. They have surfaced, proudly demonstrating their hatred, distributing Nazi leaflets, shooting up the occasional temple, attacking the rights of women, LGBT people, migrants, and the half of America that exists anywhere to the left of Attila the Hun*.

*"Attila the Hun was very right-wing, even compared with other Huns, who were, as a rule, advocates of small government, school choice, and beheading. Attila first came to public attention when he issued his "Contract With Mongolia," which called for lower taxes, ending state subsidies for unfunded federal mandates, the pillaging of Scythia, and an end to collective bargaining. His decision to invade western Europe was motivated in part by a desire to dismantle the welfare state, and in part by a desire to rape government employees. Though Attila was in many respects a social conservative, he was also an advocate of postnatal abortion. After retiring from politics, he worked as an executive at Koch Industries, and appeared on Dancing With the Stars."

Here's a crazy idea. Maybe, just maybe, a moderate Republican could enlist the support of the Democrats.

Nah, That's just crazy talk!

That is a crazy idea. They might be able to get elected to the position of Speaker, but they'd never be able to govern.

There's probably no way out but through. The GOP has to work this out - find someone that can get 217 votes.
