So good I have to repost it:

Madison: “A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defence [against] foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.”

When we had truly intelligent leaders. Now we just have a sad, vindictive, childish little clown. : (

Madison Debates - Friday June 29, 1787
"In time of actual war, great discretionary powers are constantly given to the Executive Magistrate. Constant apprehension of war, has the same tendency to render the head too large for the body.
A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defense against foreign danger have been always the instruments of tyranny at home."

A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defense against foreign danger have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.

We've managed to get by with a standing military force for about 150 or more now, without it being much of a problem.

Remember, the above quote refers to the military in general. It's not specific to some executive security force or domestic military units. It's the U.S. Army.

The Founders were very into state-supervised militias and not having a U.S. Army (or any other branches of the military). The War of 1812 showed that was unworkable. We moved past that a long, long time ago.
