The Federal Aviation Administration lifted the temporary closure of airspace over El Paso on Wednesday morning, abruptly reversing course after grounding flights for 10 days only hours earlier.

“There is no threat to commercial aviation,” the agency said on social media. “All flights will resume as normal.”

In a move that appeared to surprise state and local officials, the agency late Tuesday night halted all flights to and from El Paso International Airport for 10 days for “special security reasons,” isolating a major American metropolitan area from air travel. The closure went into effect at 11:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday and was to remain in place until 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.
