Getting a job does not mean that your employer will offer health insurance.

Small businesses have dropped healthcare coverage over the last three decades
High costs and the Affordable Care Act have pushed more small employers to stop offering healthcare.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), employers with 50 or more full-time employees are required to provide health insurance to 95 of their employees or face penalties to the IRS. This penalty is often imposed on businesses with 50 or more full-time equivalent (FTE) employees. Employers must offer comprehensive, affordable health insurance coverage or reimburse employees for premiums they pay.

For small businesses with fewer than 50 full-time employees, the ACA does not mandate offering health insurance. However, many small businesses still choose to provide coverage to stay competitive. If you don’t have health insurance from your employer, there are several options you should consider.
