This was far more elegant than that. The machine didn't go "bonkers", it followed its program. And, in the case of Colossus, was smart enough to go beyond its program. It was created to prevent war, but the sentience devised a better way to do that (as the speech posted earlier indicated).
You owe it to yourself to find and watch this movie, if that is your interest. It's 1970s sci-fi, with all the quaint blinking lights and stuff like that. But the story is solid.
