Subject: Re: North Rim of the Grand Canyon Burns
A historic lodge on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim has been destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire, the park said Sunday.
This is so sad. The North Rim is a wonderful place; so much quieter than the South Rim. More beautiful, too. We've had some wonderful vacations there and have stayed several times in the old stone cabins that sit right on the edge of the rim. The lodge was a lovely old building, built in 1937 as a replacement for the first lodge that had also burned down.
The fire also impacted the water treatment facility resulting in the escape of large amounts of chlorine gas, necessitating the evacuation of people from parts of the inner canyon.
It will no doubt take many years to rebuild the visitor facilities on the North Rim. But the old cabins and the lodge can't really be replaced.
