A few important bits.

The raids started on January 7 and were done by the Border Patrol.

Those detained were not detained at the local ICE facilities in Bakersfield, but were transported about 300 miles to the Border Patrol's own facilities in El Centro. Any who were released after being detained were left in El Centro and not returned to the Bakersfield area.

Border Patrol claims that these were targeted operations. However, it is estimated that they stopped and talked to as many as 1,000 people, while only 78 were ultimately detained for various crimes. Advocates for immigrants believe these were not targeted stops, but racial profiling.
