I think one needs to make clear to the "outsiders" that this is a religious move into politics, and that if you're not part of their religion, you're an outsider. In the extreme, they are of the opinion that you only have freedom to practice their religion.
A lot of folks are OK with religion in politics, but they want it to be their religion, not someone else's.
For the more advanced persons, give them a copy of Revolt in 2100 by Heinlein.
