I think there is much to be said for "mainstream" that is outside the US.

There is something nice about those old-school places that have fact checkers, have their own staff reporters and writers, and have responsibility/liability for what they say. Every outlet will have some selectivity about which stories get more emphasis, but that's a lot better than simply making shit up or looking for a hook upon which to hang an agenda.

I have also heard very good things about DW.com from Germany (in English), though I haven't developed the habit of reading it myself.
