iirc, Trump's official religious advisor is a proponent of "prosperity theology", meaning that, if you have been a good boy, God will reward you with material goodies. On the other hand, if you are poor, that is your punishment for being bad, somehow. So, seems the takeaway is that "good" people are rich, so don't need help. The people who are struggling must be "bad", and don't deserve help. Doesn't seem to register with them that bad things can happen to good people.
As luck would have it, I mosied over to the theater a couple weeks ago, and saw "Good Fortune", an interesting take on the "Guardian Angel" bit.
