The number of autism diagnoses HAS risen, but that is because the criteria have broadened and other conditions that were not included have now been included in the autism spectrum.

The large increase in autism diagnoses, therefore, is due to a change in definitions.

In the 80s there was a major change and a lot of diagnosis were consolidated under the autistic spectrum. Then they began teaching how to recognize it earlier in children and more behavior was pulled into the autistic spectrum.

The two main areas are deficits in social communication and interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.

Autism was first diagnose 40 years before Tylenol came out.
