I'm reminded of the bit of 1984 where the masses were told they weren't at war with Eurasia, but we're always at war with Eastasia, and the crowd tore all the posters off the walls saying they were at war with Eurasia. They accepted whatever they were fed, and destroyed anything that contradicted it.
