We foolishly thought we had a bulletproof system of checks and balances, of guardrails.

We didn’t.

Ya. It's flimsy. We seem to enact laws to prevent a disaster from happening again, then we slowly dismantle those laws till the next disaster happens. No one likes regulation, but the people whith real influence there are not the proles, eh? And we can enact laws to prevent stacking the justices in the Supreme court and they'll dismantle those. And then the Supremes dismantle laws that protect. A helluva way to run a railroad.
