“ An Oregon jury awarded $305M Wednesday to 16 wildfire survivors harmed by the Santiam Canyon wildfire in 2020, in the 15th damages trial since a 2023 verdict that found Berkshire Hathaway's (BRK.A) (BRK.B) PacifiCorp utility was grossly negligent in the state's 2020 Labor Day fires.

The jury verdict form showed 12 adults in the latest trial were each awarded $18.5M in non-economic damages for pain and suffering, while four minors were each awarded $5M.

Five people died in the Santiam Canyon fire, and more than 400K acres burned across four counties.

The verdict was the largest issued in relation to the James v. PacifiCorp class action lawsuit, pushing PacifiCorp's total liability past $1B.

Last week, PacifiCorp agreed to pay the federal government $575M over public lands that burned in Oregon and California.“
