As I recall, Trump didn't win the first few primaries. As your link said, Cruz won Iowa. And maybe another one? And I think someone else won another state (Rubio or Kasich?). Trump didn't really win much until Super Tuesday. Super Tuesday, I think Cruz and Trump both won states, but Trump won more.

If the field hadn't been so crowded (over 10 candidates), maybe Trump wouldn't have done as well?
