They have a long history of promoting conspiracy theories and failed fact checks.

Perhaps the biggest potential boon of AI is its ability to act as an "expert" net sifter (to use Steve203's term) and provide a cogent and accurate synopsis of the most important aspects of any issue. Ideally, AIs can winnow out the lies and inaccuracies and leave the consensus truth. But we also have to let the AIs mature a bit and become more sane and less subject to hallucinations.

Of course, this idea ultimately relies on the AIs evolving to be trustworthy and accurate in the long run.

And woe the day we have a "MAGAAI" or a "FOXAI" that is deliberately biased against truth.
