One of the things that Pharma does to keep the $$$$$ flowing in is to maintain a new drug's patent as long as possible. That translates to a bag of tricks that enable patent extension. The original patent is for roughly 10 years once a drug enters the market. Then the company all too often will make a minimal change in the drug that enables it to prevent the availability of competition.....generics.....and strangle the market for another 5 years.

Pharma made one of my drugs time release for a new patent. Then Drs. who prescribed the time release would get invited to a free convention. The generic worked just as well.
