I've also seen no advantage for mechanical stock picking, compared to index investing, for a few years now. At my age, the thrill of trying to beat the market by 2-3% per year, and failing at it, is no longer there.
Same - and small caps are being left behind in the new world of index investing driven by the automatic money going into self-reinforcing Mag7-cap-weighted indexes.
FWIW I've managed to ~match 60/40 funds these last 5-7 years using monthly GTAA-based mechanical index allocations combined with the long time market health indicators. A hobby really, not bothering with more than a few individual stocks these days. Younger than you by a bit. Post-lockdown until late '21 was my best year 1/2 in 15 years, last blast from the new tech stocks.
