People use VPNs for different reasons and this won't cover everyone's needs but some network equipment allows you to set up your own VPN with minimal effort. On our recent trip to Europe when I wanted to do certain things, I connected to my own VPN and all of my data ran through my home router. It worked well enough to stream shows.

Personally I try to avoid using 3rd party VPNs. I realize many do and have their own reasons to do so.
