Saturday I noticed in my Googlefinance sheet I needed to copy out the googlefinance command for the indexes, clear the cell, then paste the formula back in to get it to refresh, but that was it.

Yes, GF automatic refresh sometimes has glitches.
Most are supposed to update every 15 minutes, others every hour. The way to force it is as you said.
