Somaliland, a self-declared independent region that broke away from Somalia in 1991 but hasn’t been widely recognized internationally, is stepping up its diplomatic push for recognition.

Somaliland officials said they are willing to give the United States exclusive access to their mineral resources (including lithium and coltan) and offer U.S. military bases on the Red Sea as part of a deal in exchange for formal recognition as a sovereign state.

Israel became the only country so far to recognize Somaliland’s independence in December 2025, which Somaliland has said could lead to deeper cooperation.

The Somali federal government strongly opposes these moves, insisting Somaliland is still an integral part of Somalia and that any unilateral recognition undermines Somali sovereignty.

The African Union (AU) has repeatedly backed Somalia’s position. The AU Commission chairperson issued a statement in late December 2025 rejecting any recognition of Somaliland’s independence and reaffirming that African states should respect existing borders and sovereignty — core principles of the AU.

The AU’s Peace and Security Council went further in February 2026, formally condemning Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as invalid and insisting that only Somalia’s institutions have authority over the region’s status.

African leaders at the AU summit in mid-February also publicly rejected Israel’s recognition, stressing it threatens the unity and stability of Somalia and risks a damaging precedent for Africa.
