Even if you ascribe the absolute worst motives to Republicans—and I think Dems have things to answer for—Dems brought retribution on themselves.

Because those things were political, 100%. There was zero factual basis beyond the fact that the democrats couldn't win an election and willing to do nearly anything to get and keep political power.
