Freedom of expression. Stating opinions that some might consider taboo, or just plain wrong.

Why does that make you want to shake his hand, though? There's nothing admirable about stating terrible opinions. Freedom of speech is a laudable ideal for a society - but the individuals who are saying terrible things are just terrible people.

Saying terrible things because society lets you doesn't make you brave, daring, or noble. It just makes you an awful person. Society gives you the freedom to say terrible things because we don't want government to be in the business of deciding what's permissible or not - but if you choose to exercise that freedom in a terrible way, you're just a bad person.
