I don't have a decent stock screener for the UK unfortunately. If anyone does could you post?

I have great respect for the free FT.com free global stock screener. Give it a try. Only subscribers can see the full financial details of the results, but those are available elsewhere.

In particular, I like screening on the "five year average ROE" field.

Just watch out for the oddity that a firm is listed by every country in which it has a listing. If you're looking for UK firms you might see a German company listed as British because it has a secondary listing there.
