Am I alone (and possibly the crazy one) in doing research now for being ready for future blood in the streets?

Forget any discussions about the current omens being bad or being worse than usual--that's good advice at any time. It's probably good financial health always to be doing research on what you'd buy if the price were more attractive.
As a rule of thumb, anyone not an index type should have at least a dozen things that they have an idea of how to value, and be keeping an occasional eye on the ratio of price to value. If two of your favourites drop 10% and 50%, you should know in advance which one you'd buy.

As a side effect, I think this gets you used to the notion of pulling the trigger when the investment environment looks like all has been lost, which can be scary.
