Subject: Re: Old Turkish Proverb…
I witnessed an exchange between Gene (mid-level corp. manager at a MAJOR worldwide company) and Abe (teacher of industrial statistics in the corporate education center):
GENE: I don't see why we need to teach industrial statistics any more. Everything's on a computer.
ABE: You need to teach so people can understand things and make critical choices like what statistical techniques to use, the selection and use of data, and how to interpret results -- things like that.
GENE: But it's just a tool! Give people the tool and they can figure it out.
ABE: Gene, you just don't understand. A fool with a tool is still a fool. Fools do foolish things and the results in a manufacturing environment can be disastrous.
GENE: We'll see.
