Nope - a more likely explanation is that when they set up the debate rules:

...CNN, the news network Trump hates the most and the first one he called "fake news"
...Dana Bash and Jake Tapper as moderators
...no audience
...pre-announcement there would be exclusive people fact checking Trump (and not Biden)
...an auto-muted mic-

...they probably thought Trump would never accept.

But they forgot to take into account Trump's ego, and so if it was a bluff, Trump called it.

The rest is history.
