I don't think you can convince people of much. They have to come to the realizations on their own. For example, religion. You can point out their scientific and historical errors, their logical errors, and the sometime-horrific "scriptures", and not convince them. They have to ask questions on their own, and come to the realization on their own. I am more than willing to discuss such things, but I never expect to convince anyone.
Same with racism, or homophobia, or anything like that. LBJ was a screaming racist until he had experiences with poor black folks (I forget the details now). I think he was still racist until his death, but his attitudes changed and he became a champion for civil rights. He did that himself. Nobody talked him into it.
