ranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Thursday that relocating the country’s capital from Tehran has become unavoidable due to overcrowding and water shortages.

Pezeshkian told a meeting in Qazvin that Tehran cannot sustain more construction or population growth and that transferring water from the Persian Gulf would be extremely costly. He said Iran lacked the funds when the plan was first raised, but now the move is a necessity.

The government has proposed the underdeveloped Makran region in southeastern Iran as a possible new capital, though officials have given no timeline for the plan.
