The main reason we are finding more autism is simple: Clinicians are getting better at spotting what was always there.


That would be the top part of the rise. The bottom part of the rise was the expansion of the autism spectrum to include other behaviors, along with the continual refinement of diagnosis. So say for the last 15 years that's true, but the first 15 years was developing toward the autistic spectrum in 2005-6. That development was was necessary to have well developed diagnostic criteria - which caused your articles claim. We are probably over diagnosing now, but that will level out.

I once dated a very beautiful woman who was autistic and distant. Too distant for me. She had no women bffs.
