Progressives believe that the government's imposing of higher taxes is a GOOD thing.

Economically, tariffs are commonly understood as a form of tax.

This is much more fair tax increase than raising the income tax or raising FICA taxes.

It's ultimately a tax on consumption, so very similar to VATs which are applauded in Western Europe.
