Subject: Re: 1500 federal troops to border
They will be detained until their hearing. No more catch and release and disappear.
We talked about that a year ago. I forget albaby's numbers, but a sizeable majority show up for their hearings. They want asylum, think their claims are valid, and try to play by the rules. So they show up.
I suppose there will be an option for them to self deport rather than wait for what could be several months for their hearing.
I think the average is 2-4 years, IIRC. Too lazy to look up the lengthy discussion we had last January (2024).
Yeah, it will take a lot of resources. So what!
And time. We have to build the detention facilities first. And staff them.
Aren't you always the budget hawk? So you're OK with your taxes going up to pay for this.
FWIW, I'm OK with detaining them provided we have humane facilities to house them, and staff the courts so your "months" guesstimate above is accurate.
And I've been saying for a while that taxes need to go up. A lot. We have to close the Republican-made deficit, and the only way to do that is sacrifice vital programs (which would be very unpopular), or raise taxes to Reagan levels. Adding the expense you're talking about would require even more. Few Republicans would agree with that. In which case, you can't have your detention facilities and staffed immigration courts.
