We all heard that "no country ever surrendered due to bombing alone" argument, but Japan surrendered, without the US setting foot in any of the home islands.

Not on the home islands, no. But we did have massive troop engagements with them all over the Pacific. It's not like we didn't engage in ground fighting with them.

And, of course, we used nuclear weapons against them. If we started dropping nuclear weapons on Iran, there's a very good chance they would surrender. But I think that's just as much off the table as a full ground invasion.
