Subject: magnetic pole flip
We know it happens. Scientists have been thinking for a while that it is happening again. The Earth's poles will flip polarity. This won't happen overnight. One worry is that if the field diminishes in the process of flipping, we will lose most of our protection from highly energetic particles (cosmic, and solar). Potentially for years/decades.
