Has any tech or trend in the economy been good for democracy?

I am not being flippant; it is a serious question.

And a serious answer: the internet has certainly democratized access to information. I am stunned, by what I can learn, in an evening on the net, vs plowing through a library. The Google "net sifter" has been great at distilling the net down to a direct answer to a specific question I put to it. I just hope the answers are right. :^)
